When Young got back to Alaska she lived in her van for a few months before moving into the dry cabin. The cabin Young was being offered was a dry one — a residential structure without running water. The dry cabin is about 10 feet by 20 feet and has one room with a kitchen area and a bedroom nook. The dry cabin didn't have running water, so Young would shower in the neighbor's house a few times a week. AnnMarie Young

The Republican presidential campaign of Nikki Haley said it raked in a $1.2 million spike in donations in one day, after former President Donald Trump vowed to blacklist Haley's donors. The former United Nations ambassador's campaign said it has taken a total of $2.6 million since polls closed in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, which Trump won by more than 11 points. But polls of the Palmetto State show Haley trailing Trump by much wider margins. On Wednesday night, Trump ratcheted up the pressure on Haley by targeting her donors. "This is standard in Politics, but no longer with me," Trump wrote.

Rather, it's about how Cruz and his allies complained in 2016 about how non-Republican voters helped hand the nomination to Trump. Trump ran away with the 2016 Republican presidential nomination in part due to his sheer dominance in these so-called "open primaries." Trump's advantage in open primaries in 2016 was unmistakable. Despite holding a polling advantage in the weeks leading up to the 2016 Iowa caucuses, Trump narrowly lost the state to Cruz. But his apparent reversal on open primaries is quite simply yet another sign of his hostile takeover of the GOP.

Home Depot says the $1 billion boost to worker pay that it announced earlier this year is already yielding results. The move has led to better staffing, which has improved customer satisfaction and worker safety, the company told investors. In spite of a gloomy financial forecast, the company says the investment in employees is locked in. Campbell said the wage boost has enabled Home Depot to hire top-tier workers across the US — and keep them for longer, even as labor turnover remains high in the retail industry. Inside these boxes: Approximately $20 million worth of detained solar panels by U.S. Customs & Border Protection over suspected ties to forced labor. Shipments coming directly from China represented about $80 million worth of goods, while Malaysia accounted for $461 million and Vietnam accounted for $370 million. "UFLPA allows us to presume [goods] were produced with forced labor, and therefore they'd be excluded from the United States," said Fox. "The cotton commodity coming out of the Xinjiang region has typically been tied to forced labor," Fox told CNBC. The companies then had 30 days to come back to CBP and prove that the items were produced without forced labor.
Home Depot is spending $1 billion to increase wages for hourly workers, the company said Tuesday. Walmart similarly announced last month that it would raise its minimum wage to $14 per hour. Both Walmart and Home Depot said they hoped the raises would boost employee retention and recruitment. The investments show how tight the labor market remains for retail workers, even amid warnings of a potential recession and a rush of layoff announcements among companies in tech, media, and other industries. Retail workers are quitting at faster rates than the national average, and retail had the second most job openings of any industry as of December 2022.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has barred imports from three companies, including a supplier to Western apparel companies, that the agency says could be using North Korean forced labor. China and Russia are home to the majority of North Korean people working abroad, according to the U.S. The U.S. is leading a growing movement by Western governments to preventing goods made with forced labor from reaching store shelves. U.S. lawmakers in both parties are putting pressure on Customs to tackle forced labor, Mr. Conklin said. North Korean workers labor in dozens of countries, with Pyongyang taking between 70% and 90% of their earnings in many instances, the U.S. said in a 2018 publication.
